1. Choosing the right groups
Before joining any networking group, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you have a genuine interest in this group? If not, don't join. You must be invested financially and emotionally to give and get value within the group.
- Is it the right fit? Not all groups will be the right fit, and that's okay. Your decision to join should either be a "hell yes" or a "hell no."
- Will you learn and share? The best groups are those where you can both learn and share your own knowledge.
In-person networking: In-person networking can be a goldmine for VAs. Here's why:
- Stand out: You'll often be the only VA present, which helps you stand out.
- Personal touch: While it may be the only time you ever meet your client in person, it makes a strong impression and provides immense value.
- Stronger referrals: For those who will refer you, their referral will be much more valuable having met you in person.
Online networking: Don't underestimate the power of online networking. When done effectively, it can lead to lasting relationships:
- Build real connections: It's entirely possible to form true and lasting relationships online. Some of my closest friends and peers are people I've never met in person.
- Choose your platform wisely: Network where you naturally spend time online. I prefer LinkedIn because it's where my clients are and it's focused on business. Facebook and Instagram can be muddled with personal content.
- Ask for recommendations: Don't hesitate to ask your current network or colleagues if they would recommend any online groups.
Peer networking: Networking with peers can be incredibly valuable:
- Find referral partners: Peer networking is a great way to find complementary businesses for referral partnerships.
- Comfort in numbers: Having a familiar face at networking events can make you feel more comfortable and accountable.
